Zachary Reinstatler is non-traditional undergraduate student at the University of Cincinnati working on their bachelor’s degrees in psychology and substance abuse counseling. Their long-term goal is to go on to graduate school, earn their PhD in either clinical or counseling psychology, and provide clinical services to underserved populations. As someone who is transgender, queer, and disabled, they understand many of the difficulties that underserved populations face in accessing ethical and competent healthcare. As such, they also understand how powerful it can be for these clients to have providers who understand not just on an academic or professional level, but also from personal experience. Zachary believes in the power of bringing marginalized voices to the table, so that those patients and clients who historically have been marginalized, harmed, or disregarded and ignored by the healthcare system, have the allies and advocates they need to ensure compassionate, competent, and ethical care. They are in the unique position to be able to provide this for many of their future clients. There is a great need in the healthcare field for trans providers who can help to educate, dispel myths, and advocate for trans patients who are often the targets of discrimination and harassment by healthcare providers.
As a low-income and disabled student, Zachary relies on the support of their community to continue moving forward in their education and clinical training. Since the fall of 2017, they have maintained high grades and continue to be on the Dean’s List nearly every semester. Zachary is also a McNair Prep Scholar with the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program, a federal program which helps students from underrepresented groups gain admission into and complete doctoral programs. This year, they will be working under the mentorship of Dr. Anjali Dutt and participating in the research projects in her lab. This work includes participatory research with the refugee community in Cincinnati, among others. Additionally, Zachary is a licensed chemical dependency counselor assistant in the state of Ohio and will be working with clients beginning in the spring semester of 2021.
As someone in training to provide clinical services, Zachary highly values multicultural competence and does everything they can in their formal education and free time to identify, acknowledge, and address their personal biases, to work to overcome them, and to improve overall in this area so that they can better serve future clients.

Tales from the Bathtub by Zachary Reinstatler poetry booklet is available now!
In this very short collection of poetry, the narrator grapples with the loss and traumas at the intersection of his identities as queer, trans, and disabled. A prayer to God, a cry to the heavens, a letter to loved ones lost, and at once seething with anger, madness, desperation, grief, and hope. A reckoning with the past as the narrator grapples with the present and looks toward the future. |
